HLB Global Assurance Leader

I became an auditor because reliable and consistent information empowers people to make good decisions. As auditors, we play a critical role in providing assurance over reporting, building trust while serving our clients and communities. I’m proud to be part of a profession that serves the public interest.

While we have new, powerful tools at our disposal, like data analytics and AI, I am inspired by the timeless tools – an inquiring mindset and professional skepticism - that are at the core of our profession.

I am particularly #AuditorProud in 2024 as I take on my new role as Global Assurance Leader with HLB. I’m excited about our plans for the upcoming years, which include initiatives related to effective application of the ISAs, best practices in audit technology, and planning the audit stream at the annual HLB Advisory Tax and Audit conference.

I believe strongly in our contributions as auditors and look forward to collaborating within our HLB community. I am grateful for the way HLB member firms work together and am energized by the dedication and collaborative spirit of my colleagues around the world – by working together, we can accomplish great things.

My journey into the world of advisory and accounting was not a path I embarked upon alone. It has been a voyage enriched by the collective strength of mentors, allies and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of collaboration and diversity.

The finance and professional services sectors were arenas where tradition often overshadowed innovation. Entering this world, I found myself navigating the complexities and challenges of industries known for their rigorous structures and, at times, their resistance to change. Yet, it was within these constraints that I discovered my passion for challenging the status quo and using my unique perspective to foster inclusive growth and transformation.

Rising through the ranks, my career has been a series of deliberate steps towards not just personal achievement but also the cultivation of environments where diversity of thought and inclusivity are the bedrock of success. At GHJ, stepping into the role of Partner and Chief Strategy Officer, I broke new ground as the first non-CPA member of the Partner Group. This milestone was not just a personal victory but a reflection of GHJ's commitment to embracing diverse talents and perspectives. I was significantly supported by GHJ Managing Partner and HLB USA Chair Tom Barry, whose belief in my abilities and potential was instrumental in achieving this landmark.

My leadership journey has been deeply influenced by the belief that true growth stems from empowering others. By fostering GHJ's #BeMore culture, I endeavored to create a space where every team member feels valued and inspired to reach their fullest potential. Mentoring colleagues on their path to partnership, I have seen firsthand how nurturing talent and encouraging diverse voices can drive meaningful change and propel our industry forward. Allyship has been a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy, because I believe that progress and innovation are achieved through mutual support and the recognition of each individual's unique contributions.

On a global scale, my work with HLB has offered me a platform to influence and shape business practices around the world. This role has underscored the importance of advisory services transformation and reinforced my conviction in the power of diversity of thought for achieving superior outcomes for clients and the industry at large.

Throughout this journey, I was equipped with my own superpower: living with invisible disabilities has imbued my leadership style with empathy and a commitment to advocating for environments where everyone can succeed. This experience has taught me the value of listening, adapting and ensuring that our workplaces are accessible and inclusive for all.

To women navigating their careers, my journey is a reminder that your path is uniquely yours. It will be shaped by the allies you find and those you support in return. Embrace your journey, challenge the norms and remember that your unique perspective is not just valuable — it is essential. Our diverse experiences are not just our challenges; they are our strengths, and it is through embracing these that we can truly make a difference.

This story is not just about where I have been or what I have achieved; it is about the impact we can create when we open doors for others and champion the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA). My career stands as a beacon for the power of allyship and the belief that together, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and dynamic future.

From humble beginnings to leading from the frontlines, my journey as a woman leader has been empowering and impactful. Since my early age I used to admire strong women and began to prioritize self-respect and financial independence.

I am full of gratitude to my father who despite being from an ordinary stereotyped family, challenged the status quo and supported me in pursuing my dreams. I remember days when he was often criticized for my education as gender bias is often manifested in various aspects of the Indian society. The good part is present days are different from those days.

It is true that one educated girl can create a more equitable and inclusive future for generations to come. I was fortunate to being married to a family whose unwavering support fueled my ambition and laid the foundation for my future. I surrounded myself with a strong support system, seek out mentors and allies who not only support in my growth path but also made me learn to never be afraid to speak up and advocate for what I believe in.

During my journey, I learned valuable lessons about resilience, being authentic and the importance of staying true to oneself. As I reflect on my journey, I am proud of the impact I have made not only within my organization but also in empowering and inspiring the next generation of women leaders. I discovered that true leadership is not about conforming to stereotypes or fitting into predefined moulds but embracing one's unique strengths and leading with courage, compassion, and integrity.

If an ordinary woman like me can reach to a point of being an inspiration to others, believe me girls it is not that tough. Differentiate between dreams and goals. Dream big but set short-term achievable goals and be consistent. Keep moving forward in the direction of your dreams and do not miss celebrating every success of yours. Setbacks and deterrents are not to hold you back but to fuel yourself forward, turning adversities into opportunities.

To aspiring women leaders, I offer this advice: Believe in yourself, embrace your strengths, and never expect privileges due to your gender. Remember, the path to leadership may be challenging, but with perseverance and determination, anything is possible.

Director, HLB Ler Lum Chew (Malaysia)

As a fresh law graduate, I would not have imagined that I could develop a professional career in this established accounting firm and network. 14 years on, besides performing corporate recovery and project revival schemes under insolvency assignments, I also enjoy helping international clients venture their business into Malaysia and tackle their concerns entering new tax jurisdiction.

With my age, gender, weaknesses and background, I have at initial times on this path hesitated to move forward or hold myself below esteem. However, blending my studies in law with new knowledge and skills, I learn to develop different niches at my workplace –  particularly in the Insolvency & Corporate Recovery practice, Tax Advisory arm and lead the firm’s Asia/China desk service.

In this journey, it has been such a blessing for me to have the support and encouragement from family, mentors, colleagues, peers, who generously share their knowledge, experience and ideas with me. They inspired me to constantly explore out of the box and challenge myself – including pursuing further studies and trainings in corporate governance, insolvency laws and tax laws, acquiring new language skills and testing my capabilities in leadership roles. I have also come to appreciate that despite all challenges, learning is infinite and willingness to learn is key.

To share further context: Growing up in Malaysia, there exist inter-racial and inter-cultural interactions in my everyday life. In this habitat, I have the privilege of always discovering and learning something new about my fellows – whether through our mix of languages in daily conversations, pride in our diversified food culture, or even excitement to celebrate all variety of festive and cultural holidays. With better understanding, prejudice crumbles.

Tribute to the generations before me, as well as people who have allowed me opportunities to thrive in this professional career, I am deeply grateful to be celebrating International Women’s Day. I hope through mindful willingness to share and to learn, we can extend the ripples of support and inspiration for generations to come.

In the rise of Artificial Intelligence and decline in global population, human talent is becoming a rare resource. Why limit our pool of people? I strongly believe that skillset diversification and innovative thinking would enrich personal, professional as well as team growth. We are each imperfect and unique individuals, we can create greater values together. Instead of distinguishing one another, we could learn to appreciate each other and embrace our differences - allow ourselves to include, and be included in the community of human race.
